Stay Safe This Spring: Preparing for Spring Storms
As winter fades and the weather warms, spring brings new life—but it also brings an increased risk of severe storms. Heavy rains, high winds, hail, lightning, and even tornadoes are common during this season, often striking with little warning. It’s important to stay alert, prepared, and safe during this unpredictable season.
Spring weather can wreak havoc on the electrical grid. Strong winds and falling trees may damage power lines, while lightning strikes and flooding can lead to power outages. Our cooperative's dedicated crews work around the clock to restore power as quickly and safely as possible after a storm. We encourage all members to stay prepared and informed as spring storms roll in.
Spring Storm Safety Tips from NVEC
Stay Weather-Aware
Monitor trusted weather sources like the National Weather Service (NWS) or local meteorologists. Enable weather alerts on your phone and have a battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio on hand.
Prepare an Emergency Kit
Include essentials like bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, necessary medications, and a battery-powered phone charger. Don’t forget to stock up on important documents and pet supplies.
Have a Family Safety & Power Outage Plan
Know where your home’s safe shelter is—typically a basement or interior room without windows. Discuss your family’s storm plan and what to do if the power goes out. Keep flashlights and extra blankets accessible.
Generator Safety
If you use a portable generator, never operate it indoors or in enclosed spaces. Always follow manufacturer instructions and never plug a generator directly into a home outlet—it can cause dangerous back feeding and endanger linemen working to restore service.
Special Considerations for Medical Equipment
If you or a loved one rely on life-saving medical equipment that requires electricity, it’s critical to have a backup power plan. Options may include battery backups, generators, or arranging alternative accommodation during an extended outage. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized emergency planning.
Report Outages Safely
After a storm, report outages by calling 800-443-9462 and follow the prompts or text “OUT” to 800-443-9462. Stay away from downed power lines and always assume they are energized—report any hazards immediately.
