ERCOT Issues Conservation Appeal

Thursday | August 24, 2023
All News

ERCOT has issued a Conservation Appeal for today, August 24, from 3 p.m. – 10 p.m. due to extreme temperatures, continued near-record demand, and forecasted low wind-power generation. Tight grid conditions are expected this afternoon into the evening. ERCOT is requesting Texans to conserve electricity use, if safe to do so.

Texans can monitor current and extended grid conditions, along with other dashboards, on the ERCOT website here.

Here are some quick and free ways to conserve electricity during extreme heat without compromising your safety:

  • Turn off unnecessary lights: Switch off lights in rooms you’re not using to reduce energy consumption and heat generated.
  • Unplug devices: Unplug chargers, electronics, and appliances when they're not in use to prevent "phantom" energy consumption.
  • Use fans wisely: Use ceiling fans or portable fans to help circulate air, which can make you feel cooler at a higher temperature setting. Remember to turn them off when you leave the room.
  • Limit appliance use: Avoid using heat-generating appliances like ovens, stoves, and clothes dryers during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for no-cook or microwave meals.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to regulate your body temperature naturally, reducing the need for excessive air conditioning.
  • Lower water heater temperature: Reduce your water heater’s temperature setting to save energy and reduce the heat it generates.

Remember, safety is paramount. If the heat becomes unbearable, prioritize your well-being, and consider seeing cooler environments, staying hydrated, and taking necessary precautions.
